Volunteers serving food at Food Not Bombs Hobart

30 Years of FNB Hobart

Three decades of shared meals, rescued food, and community in Hobart.

1994 – 2024

A Table That’s Always Been Set

Food Not Bombs Hobart began in 1994 with a simple act — cooking food and sharing it freely in the city. Thirty years later, that same act continues every Saturday at Criterion House. This is the story of the people, the meals, and the moments that shaped our community.

Key Moments

1994 — The First Shared Table

Food Not Bombs Hobart serves its first free meal in the city, joining a global movement rooted in the belief that food is a right, not a privilege. A small group of volunteers cooks and shares, with no hierarchy, no forms, and no fuss.

2000s — Growing Roots

Through the 2000s, FNB Hobart builds a consistent presence. The weekly meal becomes a Hobart institution. Volunteers rotate through, regulars become family, and the network of food rescue partnerships begins to grow.

2010s — More Than a Meal

The Shared Table expands beyond food. Skills sharing, music, community projects, and new sub-initiatives emerge from the table. Volunteers connect with broader networks and FNB Hobart becomes a hub for community action in southern Tasmania.

2020 — The Table Doesn’t Stop

The COVID-19 pandemic tests every community organisation. FNB Hobart adapts — meals shift format, food rescue continues, and the network pivots to reach people who can no longer come to the table. The community holds.

Thirty years on, the Shared Table meets every Saturday at Criterion House. New faces join, old friends return. Food rescue runs weekly. The community of volunteers and guests is as alive as ever. The table is always set.
