Our Values

Our Values

At Food Not Bombs Hobart, we believe that everyone deserves access to food, friendship, dignity, and community.

Food is more than nutrition. A shared meal creates connection. It reminds us that nobody should have to face hardship alone and that every person has something valuable to contribute.

Food Is A Right

We believe access to food is a basic human right, not a privilege.

No one should go hungry in a community where food is available. We work to recover surplus food, reduce waste, and share meals freely with anyone who joins us.

Dignity For All

Every person deserves to be treated with respect.

We do not divide people into categories of “helpers” and “helped.” Around the table we meet as neighbours, each with our own strengths, struggles, and stories.

Mutual Aid

We believe communities are strongest when people support one another.

Mutual aid is different from charity. Charity can create a separation between giver and receiver. Mutual aid recognises that we all need help at different times in our lives. We build community by helping one another and sharing responsibility for the wellbeing of our community.

Participation

Everyone has something to contribute.

Some people cook. Some donate food. Some volunteer their time. Some share skills, stories, encouragement, or friendship. Every contribution matters.

Hope Through Action

We believe positive change happens through practical action.

A shared meal, a conversation, a food hamper, a community barbecue, a Pete’s Pack, or a small act of kindness can create hope and strengthen community.

Nonviolence

We are committed to peaceful action and compassionate relationships.

We seek to respond to hunger, loneliness, and hardship with cooperation rather than conflict. We believe communities flourish when people work together with kindness and respect.

Shared Table

The table is at the heart of our work.

When people gather to share food, barriers begin to disappear. Around the table people find friendship, belonging, and opportunities to participate in community life.

A shared table reminds us that everyone is welcome and everyone has a place.

Building Community Together

Food Not Bombs Hobart is powered by volunteers, supporters, and community members who believe that a better society is built one relationship at a time.

Together we create spaces where people are welcomed, valued, and encouraged to contribute.

Because community is not some

  • Volunteer Guidelines & Expectations
Volunteers are at the heart of Food Not Bombs Hobart. Whether you’re helping prepare meals, sorting donations, packing Pete’s Packs, serving food, assisting at community events, or simply offering a friendly conversation, your contribution matters. We ask all volunteers to treat everyone with dignity, kindness, and respect. Our goal is not only to share food, but to build community, create connection, and offer hope through practical acts of mutual aid. No special skills are required—just a willingness to help, learn, and work alongside others.
