For the past eight years, Food Not Bombs Hobart quietly kept turning up each week. We cooked meals, shared food, rescued what would otherwise be wasted, and built a community table where everyone was welcome.
This week I met with Foodbank Tasmania and professional documentary filmmaker GVS Media to plan filming for a Community Partner Story that will be produced over 2–3 October.
Foodbank Tasmania has chosen a small number of organisations to showcase the impact of its food relief network. One sentence from their invitation particularly stood out to us:
“We believe the work Food Not Bombs undertakes would help demonstrate the real impact of this partnership in the community.”
Those words mean a lot.
Before Food Not Bombs Hobart had much of a public profile, many people helped us quietly behind the scenes. For years we struggled along with limited resources, doing our best to meet the need we could see around us.
Today, thanks to Foodbank Tasmania, our volunteers, donors, community partners and the many people who sit at our Shared Table each week, we are reaching more people than ever. The work hasn’t become easier—in many ways it has doubled or tripled as attendance has grown—but we are grateful because it means more people are finding food, friendship and community when they need it.
This story isn’t really about us. It’s about what happens when a community works together. Foodbank supplies food. Volunteers give their time. Community partners open doors. People share meals together. And little by little, something bigger than any one person becomes possible.
